Within the Department of Communication Science (Tilburg University, Arts
Faculty) the Chair of Discourse Studies is vacant. Applications are invited
for the position of:

Professor of Discourse Studies
full-time (0.8 - 1.0 FTE), vacancy number 810.05.03

Main responsibilities
Research and teaching
The Professor of Discourse Studies directs and conducts research into
semantic and structural characteristics of discourse and into aspects of
the comprehension and production processes of written, spoken, and digital
discourse, as organized in the Discourse Studies research program. (S)he
contributes to the further development of the existing research
infrastructure of the faculty. (S)he stimulates interdisciplinary research
and collaboration with other research programs, in particular those of
Communication and Cognition and Language & Information Science. (S)he
maintains and further develops an attractive offer of courses in discourse
studies at bachelor's and master's level.

Administration
The Professor of Discourse Studies manages a group of academic staff,
postdocs and PhD students, as well as technical and secretarial support,
and provides leadership at group, faculty, and university level.

Profile:
The responsibilities that come with this function call for a scientist with
a research and teaching background in discourse studies and with managerial
experience in a research and teaching environment. The successful candidate
for this Chair:
- is an authority in the area of discourse studies, as evidenced by a PhD
thesis and by publications in authoritative publication media, and as such
well acquainted with pragmatic and semantic theories of language and
language use, as well as with cognitive theories of language comprehension
and production;
- is able to manage and expand a sophisticated methodological infrastructure
for conducting cognitive-experimental and corpus-based research;
- has proven managerial and leadership qualities;
- is able to direct teaching and research activities according to international
standards of quality;
- has shown the ability to combine fundamental and applied research and to raise
external funding from scientific as well as non-scientific sources;
- has proven experience and affinity with research and teaching on the subject
of discourse studies in a multidisciplinary context;
- is an experienced and inspiring teacher;
- is able or willing to learn to communicate in Dutch.

Terms of employment:
Tilburg University is rated among the top Dutch employers and has excellent
terms of employment. The selected candidate will apply for a full-time
tenure contract and will be ranked in the Dutch university employment
system (UFO) as full professor, level 2.
