Meeting Description:

The American Name Society (ANS), an academic, professional organization devoted
to the study of names and their role in society meets with the Linguistic
Society of America (LSA), the American Dialect Society (ADS), and other allied
organizations each January.  For more information about the Linguistic Society
of America and the conference go to www.lsadc.org.  Additional information about
the American Name Society and the annual meeting may be obtained at
www.wtsn.binghamton.edu/ANS/. 

Papers in any area of onomastics are appropriate, and a precis of not more than
500 words for anonymous review, accompanied by a 100-word abstract for
publication in both the LSA Meeting Handbook and the separate ANS meeting
program, should be submitted as soon as convenient but not later than August 1,
2006.  Proposals for panel discussions, suggestions for distinguished speakers,
and/or other types of proposals are due by July 1, 2006.  

The preferred method of transmission, for both the precis and accompanying
abstract, is as an e-mail attachment sent to paord at verizon.net. They may also,
however, be sent via surface mail to:  P. A. Ord, 414 High Earls Road,
Westminster, MD  21158-3710.  Members and others interested parties who need
additional time to secure international payments and arrange for travel to the
United States are urged to submit their precis and abstract as soon as possible
in order to be able to be present in January.

Membership in ANS is a requirement of all presenters, who are also expected to
pay the LSA conference registration fee, as well as an additional, incidental
registration fee to ANS to cover expenses not covered by LSA.

Meeting Description:

To launch the Australia-New Zealand branch of the Institute of Communication
Ethics, a one-day conference will be held immediately before the 2006 Australia
New Zealand Communication Association annual meeting with the theme, Ethical
Communicators. 

Expressions of
interest and abstracts are invited now from scholars and practitioners on
the ethical dimensions of communication.

Deadline for abstracts (300 words): May 30, 2006. Abstracts will be
peer-reviewed.

Papers are particularly invited which explore the following areas in
relation to communication practices and professions:

ethical best practice
ethical codes
ethical problems in practice
discourse ethics
public policy implications

As an interdisciplinary group, ICE invites contributions from a wide range of
areas, including applied ethics, communication, computing, cultural studies,
discourse studies, education, information technology, journalism, law,
management communication, marketing, philosophy, psychology, public relations
and sociology.

Keynote speakers are:

Prof Simon Rogerson, Director, Centre for Computing and Social
Responsibility, De Montfort University, UK

Prof John Weckert, Professor, School of Information Studies, Charles Sturt
University

Dr Edward Spence, Senior Lecturer, School of Communication, Charles Sturt
University

The format will be informal and will emphasise discussion. To that end, aside
from the keynotes, presenters will be asked to talk briefly (10 minutes) to
their papers. Papers will be made available.

Registration: AU$55 ($25 for students), free for members (including those
who join at the event).
