Linguistic Field(s): Ling & Literature
Meeting Description:
he major aim of the conference is to give a push towards collaboration across
the four disciplines of language, linguistics, literature and translation, and
show how such collaboration and cross-fertilization of ideas can lead to news
ways of thinking and working.
The Department of English, Sultan Qaboos University, presently comprises four
major strands in its activities: language, linguistics, literature and
translation. While each of these disciplines is rich and well-established,
there is a tendency towards isolationism at a global level, in which
researchers/teachers in one area rarely engage in debate with their counterparts
in another area. Where such collaboration has occurred, however, there have
been significant benefits in engendering fresh insights and the development of
new approaches to research and teaching. The aim of this conference is to
further such collaboration.
Plenary speakers include Professor Clive Holes, Professor of Contemporary Arab
World Studies, Oxford University and Professor Mona Baker, Professor of
Translation and Intercultural Studies, University of Manchester.
