Meeting Description:
The Yugoslav Association of Applied Linguistics (YALA) in cooperation with The
Faculty of Philology of the University of Belgrade (Serbia) are hosting a
four-day international conference 'Applied Linguistics Today' in Belgrade from
28 September - 1 October 2006.
Topics for paper sessions include the following:
- theoretical problems in applied linguistics;
- linguistic theories applied in various domains;
- language learning theory;
- contrastive analysis;
- literature and language;
- cultural elements in the teaching of foreign languages;
- methods in language teaching: applicability in schooling
systems;
- regional language contacts in applied linguistics;
- Hellenic inheritance in South-Eastern Europe.
The conference is expected to provide an open forum for some 140 participants,
mainly applied linguists and language educators from the Balkan region and
further afield, to discuss current issues and challenges.
The introductory and welcome speech will be given by Professor Ranko Bugarski,
Honorary President of YALA.
The conference is featuring the following keynote speakers:

Linguistic meaning and pragmatic interpretation: why is pragmatics relevant
for applied linguistics
Professor Statis Efstathiadis, Aristotle University, Thessaloniki (Greece):
The Greek language: its global impact on languages and cultures of Europe
