Subject: Editor Jessica Boynton on Joining LINGUIST
My mother and I used to just go driving sometimes. We'd take a deck
of cards and assign each one to a direction, then just flip through
the deck and see where it took us. The only rule was that we couldn't
try to remember how we got anywhere - the things we saw, the places
where we ate, the people we met were all just fated for that trip,
that moment in time. I plan my life a little more carefully than I
used to plan my road-trips, but I still let the moment take me places.
I chose to come to EMU before I'd even ever heard of LINGUIST. I
came here because it felt like the right thing to do. I started out
with a major in linguistics having only read a book or two on the
subject. I threw myself into it because I was in love with the idea
of it.
When I joined the LINGUIST crew, it wasn't because I thought it would
get me places. I joined because it felt like home.I can't deny that
my work at LINGUIST has given me tangible benefits toward my future
career. In representing LINGUIST at conferences and to visitors at
home, I've met and learned from inspiring linguists from across the
globe. In working with E-MELD, I've learned all about digital language
documentation and met with some of the top documentary linguists in
the field. The true value of LINGUIST to me, however, is not defined
by what it can get me. It is defined by what it is.LINGUIST is the
opportunity to become part of the linguistics community.
Starting at LINGUIST as an undergraduate catapulted me into a
professional environment at an earlier time than most students. As
a result, I already feel at home chatting with fellow linguists and
sending off abstracts to conferences.LINGUIST is the ability to do
work that really contributes to my field of study. Every day I
come in and do work that interests me and is truly valuable to my
colleagues. I love my job, and I get to do fantastic things for
it. LINGUIST is the online hub of linguistics, providing all of
us with useful information.
We find our PhD programs, our jobs, our conferences, our web-resources
and our books on the LINGUIST website. We can ask questions and
participate in discussions. Through associated projects we can learn
about digital language documentation and find information about other
linguists, and will soon be able to access language maps and multiple
renditions of language family trees.
LINGUIST is a free resource because we are funded by reader support.
Students, professors, professionals and people who are just plain
fascinated by linguistics donate so that this resource can remain
useful and free to everyone. People just like you have shown their
support, even if they've only been able to afford a small donation.
Please spare what you can, so that LINGUIST can continue to be
everything it is to all of us.

For all information on donating and pledging, including information on how to
donate by check, money order, or wire transfer, please visit:
http://linguistlist.org/donate.html
The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as
such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered
501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These
donations can be offset against your federal and sometimes your state tax return
(U.S. tax payers only). For more information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact
your financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any
gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your
contacting your human resources department and sending us a form that the EMU
Foundation fills in and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple
administrative procedure that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST,
without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if your
company operates such a program.
Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
