Description:

The Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL), a university-affiliated research center located 
at the University of Maryland, was established in 2003 under a renewable five-year contract.  Its 
mission is to conduct state-of-the-art research in areas that result in improved performance on 
language tasks relevant to the work of government language professionals.  Work done at the 
center focuses on improving knowledge of less commonly taught languages, enhancing the 
acquisition and maintenance of foreign language capability by government professionals 
(especially at the advanced levels), advancing the capacity to use foreign language skills in a wide 
variety of government professions and situations, and improving the quality of human language 
technology.

CASL is seeking to researchers to contribute to its research efforts in the area of Language and 
Culture. The candidate will work with a team of anthropologists and anthropological or socio- 
linguists investigating a range of basic issues and applied problems related to working with or 
learning foreign languages. Current projects include the development of cultural knowledge 
prototypes and scenarios to aid government professionals. Additional projects that further 
CASL's mission will be developed consistent with the skills and interests of the researchers hired. 
Throughout the center, researchers drawn from linguistics, second language acquisition, 
cognitive and computer science, anthropology and sociology work in collaborative teams to aid 
government professionals in the improvement of their on the job performance or foreign 
language training.   

Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. and demonstrate a record of individual research 
achievement, a strong record of publication, and the ability to establish an interdisciplinary 
research program across areas related to the study of language and analysis. Appointments are 
as research faculty members of the University of Maryland and carry the title of assistant, 
associate or senior research scientist, as appropriate. Affiliations with University of Maryland 
academic departments are encouraged.  Candidates must hold U.S. citizenship and be willing to
