Dissertation Abstract:
This study has been intended to investigate whether it is possible to
establish a methodology that will allow both teachers and language teaching
institutions to audit a wide range of type of teaching materials by
applying a common frame of reference to all of them.
It is with aim that the subsequently undertaken research has comprehended
three main areas: a) the update and analysis of the bibliography
specialised in subjects related to teaching materials, their study and
professional management; b) the design and trialing of a computer tool for
the analysis of materials; c) the application of this tool to a corpus of
500 instructional samples extracted from a selection of teaching materials
representative of five methodological approaches.
The practice stage of the investigation has produced more than 70,000 data,
which have been subjected to several statistical tests. The results of
these tests have provided encouraging arguments, which seem to confirm the
validity of the proposed hypothesis.
