Subject: MA Program in Sprachlehrforschung, Hamburg/Germany
At the University of Hamburg a two year Master of Arts program in
"Sprachlehrforschung" (the German equivalent to Second Language Acquisition
Research/ Applied Linguistics) with admission in the winter semester was
started in the autumn of 2006.
Description:
Sprachlehrforschung is interdisciplinary in its research strategies and
integrates methods and results from other domains, such as language
teaching theory and methodology, (psycho-)linguistics, educational
psychology and sociology. The program offers theoretical instruction as
well as exposure to practical applications in the following areas:
* Second and foreign language learning
* Inter cultural and multilingual communication
* Classroom communication in a foreign language
* Pedagogical principles and methods in second and foreign language
teaching and communication training
In the first year all these fields have to be studied. In the second year
students are given the opportunity to choose one or two of the following
options:
1. Second/foreign language acquisition (especially by adults)
2. Teaching of a second/foreign language
3. Inter cultural and multilingual communication
The curriculum consists of lectures and seminars, which are combined in
modules, as well as individual reading and research on topics chosen by the
students.
Admission:
The requirements for admission to this program are
o the successful completion of a Bachelor of Arts (for precise information
on which B.A. programs are accepted, please contact the department (see
"contact information"))
o advanced grammar knowledge and communication skills in at least one
foreign language including an awareness of the socio-cultural context of
its speakers
o good competence in English (particularly important are the receptive
skills of listening and reading, as many reading materials are in English)
o an adequate knowledge of German, as the teaching is mainly in German.
