CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS

Special issue on learning and teaching of L2-writing 
OF ITL INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF APPLIED LINGUISTICS

Gert Rijlaarsdam, University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Elke van Steendam, Antwerp University, Belgium, 
Daphne van Weijen, Utrecht University, the Netherlands

1. INVITATION
Hereby we invite you to submit proposals for contributions to ITL
International Journal of Applied Linguistics, for a special issue on
learning and teaching L2 writ-ing. We are especially interested in studies
which include the intercultural compo-nent of writing in L2. Please note
that the term L2 is not restricted to English as a second language but that
we would like to include as many different L2s as possible.

We intend to publish three types of studies:
1) Theoretical overviews of the relations between L1 and L2 processes, and
theo-retical overviews of effective teaching practices in L2 writing education
2) Descriptive empirical studies (qualitative, quantitative) on L2 writing
processes, L2 learning-to-write processes, the role of L1 in L2 writing and
learning proc-esses, backwash effects of L2 learning on L1 processes and
texts, etc. The focus should be on L2 writing and learning (whatever
language L2 might be, certainly not only English). Studies on the relations
with L1, learner characteristics and media of writing are also welcomed.  
3) Experiments and intervention studies that allow conclusions about causal
rela-tions between learning environments, course design, experimental
lessons and the effect on text quality and/or writing processes.

In addition, we would like to invite (all) practitioners who teach L2
writing to con-tribute to the Writing Board.

2. GUIDELINES FOR PROPOSALS
Studies. Proposals: 2,250 words, containing an abstract (250 words) and an
extended summary (2,000 words), including all components of a research
article (research questions, design, data, analysis, results and
discussion). Deadlines:
1) Proposals: October 15th 2007
2) Decision/Invitation: November 1st, 2007
3) First versions submitted: December 15th 2007

Writing board. Short descriptions of effective teaching practices,
including a de-scription of the subjects/target audience, intervention,
results/experiences. 400 words (Vignettes).

2) Decision/Invitation: November 1st, 2007
3) First versions submitted: December 15th 2007

3. COMMUNICATION
