Description:

The School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics at Newcastle
University invites applications for a Temporary Teaching Assistantship in
Sociolinguistics/Sociology of Language to begin on 19th September, 2008. 

Applicants will normally be either close to submitting their PhD or within
two years of being awarded the PhD. This position is for one semester
(until 23rd January 2009) and is to provide replacement teaching at
undergraduate and postgraduate levels for modules taught by Professor Karen
Corrigan while she is on AHRC-funded leave.

The School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics has active
undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in English Language and
Linguistics (see website above) and has a strong complement of staff with
expertise in these fields (see http://www.ncl.ac.uk/elll/staff/). The
Teaching Assistant will, therefore, have the opportunity to interact with
staff, sharing methods and ideas for teaching and also participating in our
lively research culture (see http://www.ncl.ac.uk/linguistics/).

The School is seeking candidates who show early promise as excellent
university teachers and researchers and who have specialties in
Sociolinguistics and the Sociology of Language. The candidate will teach
and examine a stage 2/3 undergraduate module in these sub-disciplines of
English Language/Linguistics as well as a taught postgraduate module
linked to this.

Applicants should submit a letter of application, a statement of teaching
philosophy (including evidence of teaching potential), a sample of written
work, and a CV.
