Abstract:
I am pleased to announce the publication of an up-to-date textbook for the
field of music cognition.
The book focuses on the field of music cognition but also cover topics that
may be of interest to linguists, including:
- cognitive connections between music and speech
- evolutionary accounts of music and language
- acoustic foundations of hearing
- investigations of syntactic processes using brain imaging techniques
(EEG, MEG, fMRI, PET)
- emotional codes in music and speech prosody
- auditory development
- effects of music training on reading ability
- rhythmic structure
and many other topics. The book would be ideal as an undergraduate
textbook, or for anyone who wants a review of current issues in the various
subdisciplines of music cognition. It includes sound examples, sidebars,
and other features. Additional information may be found at the Oxford
