Description:

The Faculty of Education has a long history of productive engagement with
the key issues facing education in South Africa. It is a national leader in
Language Education, Mathematics and Science Education, Educational Support,
as well as Educational Leadership and Management. As a Faculty highly
committed to research, it offers innovative, research-based training of
teachers and runs a major postgraduate programme. Its dedication to
improvement of the education system has led to presentation of significant
in-service programmes for the Department of Education, partnership with the
Northern Cape Institute of Higher Education, and engagement with schools in
research and school improvement projects.
Applications are now invited for the following position, available from 1
January 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Professor of Language Education
The Language Education Department runs a range of pre- and in-service
education programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
This position is offered to a candidate who is able to make a substantial
contribution to teaching and research within one or more of the
Department's niche areas, viz. multilingualism and identities in and out of
schools, the development of advanced biliteracy skills across the
curriculum, and academic literacy. The appointee must also be able to offer
leadership in multilingual literacies across the spectrum from Foundation
Phase to FET.
The appointment requires a doctorate in Applied Linguistics or Language
Education. A history of research in bilingual or multilingual education
along with experience in the educational applications of Systemic
Functional Linguistics will be strong recommendations. Knowledge of and
experience in Information & Communication Technologies (ICT) in Language
Education and/or the teaching of literature would also be valuable. 

In addition, the envisaged candidate will have: 
- advanced proficiency in at least two languages 
- a substantial record of relevant publications 
- a record of securing research funding 
- skills to construct a coherent research agenda consistent with the broad
research goals of the Faculty 
- capacity and experience in supervising doctoral and master's students 
- ability and disposition to nurture and promote the careers of junior staff 
- demonstrated competence in management
