Description:
There is a PhD assistantship available for 4 years beginning in the Fall of 2010
in the PhD program of the Department of Educational Theory and Practice at the
State University of New York, Albany. The assistantship has specific
requirements because the successful candidate will have to work as an editorial
assistant at the journal "Intercultural Pragmatics" published by Mouton de
Gruyter: Berlin/New York, and edited by Professor Istvan Kecskes.
Responsibilities include proof-reading, copy-editing, preparing manuscripts for
publication, logging, and maintaining files on in-coming manuscripts through all
stages of publication; and performing editorially-related administrative tasks.
Our assistantships range from $11,000 to $12,000. Generally they carry 9 units
of tuition per semester, and require students to take at least 9 credits until
they are admitted to candidacy and are allowed to register for 1 unit of
dissertation research.
Applicants need to have a master's degree or equivalent in linguistics, English,
second language education, communication, TESOL or a closely related field. The
preparation of a PhD-dissertation on a topic related to pragmatics,
intercultural communication, second language acquisition or bi- and
multilingualism is expected. Because of the nature of the assistantship the
successful candidate must be a native-speaker of English and have some prior
experience in editing journals, books, magazines, etc. S/he must possess
proofreading skills and have extensive knowledge of English grammar and
punctuation.
Candidates are requested to email their applications (letter describing research
interests, qualification for the editorial assistantship and CV) to the
following email address:

Applications received by November 15, 2009 will receive full
consideration, however, later applications may be considered as well until the
position has been filled. The successful candidate must also go through the
application procedure of the PhD program.
