Abstract:

In institutional settings, the constitution of social identity is
manifested in the speakers' discourses as a product of many functional and
social parameters. In an international business environment, speakers may
employ language mixes for functional-communicative reasons but also as a
stylistic device. The present study examines the ways the employees working
in the local German headquarter of an international corporation use English
language mixes when displaying and negotiating their social identities. The
speakers operate in the context of the global structure of their
organizational unit and the organizational specifics of the local German
department they are deployed to.
