I received replies on this topic from Mike Morgan, Jae Jung Song, 
Bálint Tanos, Susanne Gundermann, Sean Witty, Marina Gorlach, 
Todd Hughes, and Simon Kasper. Thanks to all of you.

The clear winner in terms of number of votes was Lindsay Whaley's 
text "Introduction to Typology" (Sage 1997), with Jae Jung Song's 
book, "Linguistic Typology: Morphology and Syntax" (Longman, 2001), 
a healthy contender.

(So, if I assign a course text, it will be the Whaley. However, as a 
couple of you pointed out, the Whaley text is unduly expensive; even 
comparatively affluent students may balk at the (reduced) price on 
Amazon of ? 6,418. For that reason, I'll think on it more before 
assigning the text.)
