Dissertation Abstract:
The objective of our work has been the establishing of a comparison between
the past tenses of the indicative in Spanish and in Modern Greek. The model
used as a base for the comparison is the vectorial model of temporality
developed initially by Rojo in 1974 and elaborated by Rojo & Veiga in 1999.
The two basic concepts of the model are:
a) Verbal forms express linguistic temporal relations of anteriority/
simultaneity/ posteriority between an event and the point of origin. These
relations are conceived as vectors and a system of formulae that resemble
mathematical formulae is adopted in order to represent temporal relations
in an economical way.
b) It is often observed that temporal and modal values coincide. In that
case, such uses are not considered to be deviations or errors but on the
contrary the existence of an underlying systematicity is suggested. Thus,
for each verbal form a distinction is proposed between straight and
dislocated uses.
Consequently, all straight and dislocated uses of the verbal forms in both
languages can be explained by temporality and the general categories of
temporal dislocation. Between the two languages, pairs of verbal forms are
created which not only share the same vectorial formula (i.e., they share
the same basic temporal value) but on the other hand they share almost the
same straight uses as well. More or less the same happens with the
dislocated uses - being observed maybe a wider panorama of them in Spanish.
However, the similarities do not hold in all cases; the most evident
differences are observed in the field of the Perfect. Another important
point we have to draw the attention to is our decision to introduce in the
Spanish paradigm the periphrastic constructions 'estar + gerund'. In any
case, the similarities presented in the two linguistic systems as far as
the past tenses of the indicative are concerned, is surprising and other
fields of them are worth being explored in more details in future
investigations.
