We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.
In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.
To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at

I would like to know if there are any books on the History of the Italian
Language that are similar in scope and format to Lloyd's "From Latin to
Spanish" or Penny's "History of the Spanish Language" (please see full
citations below).
I am interested in such a book for a History of the Spanish Language
class that I am teaching that has double Spanish/Italian majors who are
interested in comparing the evolution of Italian and Spanish from Latin.
It can be written in English or Italian, but it needs to be the internal
history of the language, not external.
Bibliography:
Lloyd, Paul M. 1987. From Latin to Spanish. Philadelphia: American
Philosophical Society.
Penny, Ralph. 2002. A History of the Spanish Language. Second
Edition. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.
Linguistic Field(s): Historical Linguistics
Subject Language(s): Italian (ita)
Language Family(ies): Latin Subgroup
