Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships to study Quichua in
the Andes and Amazon Field School in Ecuador for the Summer of 2011 are
available through the University of Pittsburgh. The deadline is March 1,
2011. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and must be
enrolled in any graduate program at any university for the Fall of 2011.
Participating faculty for summer 2011 include Janis Nuckolls, specialist in
Kichwa linguistics BYU, Robin Wright (University of Florida, Gainesville),
Tim Smith (Appalachian State University); Kathleen Dewalt (University of
Pittsburgh) and Tod Swanson (Arizona State University). Details and
application forms are available at http://andes-fieldschool.org.

FLAS Fellowships for the Andes and Amazon Field School are awarded by the
Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Pittsburgh to
qualifying applicants from any University. In addition many Title VI
Centers for Latin American Studies around the country have awarded FLAS
Fellowships to attend the Field School to their own students. If you are a
graduate student at a FLAS granting institution please submit an
application to both the University of Pittsburgh and the Center for Latin
American Studies at your home institution. To qualify for a FLAS
Fellowship applicants must be a U.S. citizen or resident and enrolled in a
graduate degree program for Fall 2011.

A complete application to the University of Pittsburgh will include:

1. Application form (The application form can be downloaded from our web
site at

2. Curriculum vitae (maximum of two pages)
3. Undergraduate and graduate transcripts
4. Brief statement (3 page maximum) providing a history of languages
previously studied (number of years of study and current ability in those
languages); and  articulating how the study of Kichwa (Quichua) fits into
your study plans and career objectives
5. Two letters of recommendation from faculty members

If possible, please also email tod.swanson at asu.edu to inform Tod Swanson of
your intent to apply. Feel free to call me to discuss the fellowship or
fieldschool at 480 361-9289. If the Center for Latin American Studies at
your home university offers summer FLAS Fellowships please apply to both
your home university and the University of Pittsburgh to increase your
chances of receiving a FLAS Fellowship.

Selection:

The selection of fellowship recipients and alternates will be made by a
committee composed of three Pittsburgh CLAS faculty members from the
departments of languages and linguistics. Julian Asenjo, Assistant Director
of Academic Affairs of the Center for Latin American Studies, will be the
non-voting coordinator. The committee will meet in March; applicants will
be ranked according to the contents of their files. All applicants will be
notified of the committee's decisions in late March or early April. The
Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships are funded by the U.S.
Department of Education (USDE). Final approval of the candidates and their
proposed language program will be done by the Latin American Program
Officer of USDE.
