Research Associate on 5-year ERC-funded 'Reconsidering Comparative Syntax'
Project 

Applications are invited for the post of Research Associate (RA) in the
Linguistics Department, working with Prof. Ian Roberts. This vacancy is
connected to the award of an ERC Advanced Grant, entitled 'Rethinking
Comparative Syntax', for the period 2011-16. The project will be based at
the University of Cambridge. The research team comprises, in addition to
Roberts, Dr Theresa Biberauer (Senior Research Associate), Dr Michelle
Sheehan (Research Associate) and Professor Anders Holmberg (Newcastle
University, consultant). Five PhD students will also be appointed in
October 2011 and 2012. The principal activity of the RA will be to
undertake research in one of the main areas described in the project
proposal (see link below), preferably in the area of the crosslinguistic
analysis of, broadly speaking, 'discourse-configurationality' and related
phenomena. The project will also involve conferences and joint publications
in which the RA will play a key part. 

The RA will be expected to be willing to branch into new language areas and
areas of specialization, and to be a proactive, productive team player as
part of the group. You will be required to hold a PhD and will have
demonstrable interests in one or more fields covered by the project. You
will also demonstrate a thorough command of current Chomskyan syntactic
theory, a track record in comparative syntactic research, and excellent
writing skills in English. You will be aiming to produce an independent
monograph in a project-relevant area distinct from your doctoral
dissertation, preferably by the end of the project (May 2016). You will
also be involved in supervising and mentoring project PhD students. You may
also be asked to contribute to Departmental teaching, supervising for
undergraduate courses, and assisting in MPhil courses and Tripos examinations.

Due to funding limitations, the salary for this pensionable post will be in
the range of £27,319 to £29,983 pa. The appointment will run from 1 June
2011 for 60 months, and is subject to satisfactory completion of a
probationary 6-month period.
