Description:
PhD Studentship in Interaction Mining
Queen Mary, University of London - School of Electronic Engineering and
Computer Science
http://www.jobs.ac.uk/job/ACL803/phd-studentship-in-interaction-mining/
Applications are invited for a PhD Studentship starting in September 2011 to
undertake research in the area of interaction mining: automatically extracting
useful information from human conversational interaction. The studentship is
based at the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science at Queen
Mary, University of London and will be supervised by Dr. Matthew Purver
(http://www.eecs.qmul.ac.uk/~mpurver/) of the Interaction Media and
Communication research group and Dr Tassos Tombros
(http://www.eecs.qmul.ac.uk/~tassos/) of the Risk and Information Management
research group.
The successful candidate will perform research at the interface between dialogue
processing and information retrieval, combining rule-based models of dialogue
structure with robust statistical methods to automatically detect and summarise
events in conversation: decisions made in business meetings, answers to
questions in radio broadcasts, agreements and disagreements in social media and
so on.
Candidates should have a first or upper second (2:1) honours degree or equivalent
in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related
field, and be able to demonstrate strong mathematical and analytical skills. Good
programming skills and a background in natural language processing,
computational linguistics or information retrieval are also required.
The studentship funded by EECS Studentship will cover student fees and a tax-
free stipend starting at £15,590 per annum and is available to candidates of all
nationalities.
Informal enquiries can be made by email to Dr. Matthew Purver
(m.purver at qmul.ac.uk).
Information about the school and its research areas can be found at
www.eecs.qmul.ac.uk; more details of the IMC and RIM research groups are
available at www.dcs.qmul.ac.uk/researchgp/imc/ and
www.dcs.qmul.ac.uk/researchgp/ir/.
To apply please email the following documents to Dr. Matthew Purver
(m.purver at qmul.ac.uk) : a completed application form, a CV listing all
publications, your representative publications in PDF format, 3 reference letters, a
research statement and other relevant documents as requested (see
www.qmul.ac.uk/postgraduate/apply/). These documents must also be submitted
online following the instructions given in the link.
The closing date for the applications is 16th. May 2011.
Interviews are expected to take place during w/c 30th. May 2011.
Application Deadline: 16-May-2011

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as
such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered
501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These
donations can be offset against your federal and sometimes your state tax return
(U.S. tax payers only). For more information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact
your financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match
any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your
contacting your human resources department and sending us a form that the
EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple
administrative procedure that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without
costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if your company
operates such a program.
Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
