Dear Linguists:

We need your help.  We need your bibliographies.

In July of this year the National Science Foundation of America awarded a 
grant (BCS 1057725) to the University of Hawai'i and LINGUIST List to build a 
comprehensive database on endangered languages (Endangered Languages 
catalogue, or ELCat).  The aim of the database is to provide accurate, up-to-
date information on the endangered languages of the world and ultimately to 
produce a definitive catalog of languages at risk. It will update existing 
information and provide new data not available from current sources, offering 
this information in an accessible, maintainable online format.  The catalog will 
allow users to assess, not only how critically endangered a language is, but 
also how much it can contribute to scientific knowledge and how well it has 
already been described. Thus it will provide information on: (1) the number, 
age, and location of the speakers, (2) the genetic affiliation of the language, 
and (3) what descriptive materials and projects already exist.

The content of the catalog will be developed by the linguistic research teams 
at the University of Hawaii and at LINGUIST List at Eastern Michigan 
University, in collaboration with regional experts. It will be designed so that 
scholars, community members, and other users can submit and annotate 
catalog information in many different ways, e.g., via smart phone, as well as 
conventional Internet applications.

We are now trying collect as comprehensive a bibliography of endangered 
languages as possible, as well as a list of all projects on endangered 
languages.  We know that many of you keep bibliographies of publications in 
your area, and it would be immensely useful to us if you would be willing to 
contribute them to the project. 

Obviously, we would prefer that the bibliographies we receive are in a form 
that can easily be read by a machine, such as BIBTeX or Endnote.  But we 
would be happy to take any you wish to send, in whatever form they are, 
whether text or Word or any other format you might use.
