Job Location: Berlin, Germany

Job Rank: Researcher

Specialty Areas: Language Acquisition; Morphology; Phonetics; Semantics; Syntax

Description:

The Centre for General Linguistics (ZAS) invites applications for up to
three research positions in linguistics with a starting date between July
1st and October 1st 2012 subject to final availability of funding.
Contracts can be extended maximally until December 31, 2013.

The ZAS is a research institute of the State of Berlin receiving major
financial support from the German Federal Government. Its five main
divisions currently focus on the general research program 'Embedding,
linkage and constituent boundaries in speech, grammar and discourse'.
It offers in-house experimental facilities for phonetics and eye-tracking
(Tobii T60). EEG and possibly other methods could be conveniently
accessed through local collaborations.

Duties are primarily research-oriented, which can include some
administration and acquisition of external funding. It is possible to teach
at any university in the Berlin area.

The position is remunerated according to E13 of the German TVOeD
pay scale. Applicants must have completed their Ph.D. by the time of
appointment, and proven research experience and an active research
agenda. Overall academic promise and accomplishment are the
primary selection criteria. Special consideration will be given to
applicants whose research integrates well with the existing strengths of
the ZAS and its core research program, and we specifically seek to
strengthen the following four areas:

1) Phonetics/phonology: Applicants should have a background of
experimental research guided by theoretical questions, with a focus on
experimental prosody. The research proposal should include either
acoustic or articulatory experiments related to prosodic constituents
and/or experiments that include the manipulation of acoustic signals for
the purpose of elucidating the role of prosody in meaning and
discourse structure.

2) Lexical aspects of clausal embedding: Applicants should have a
strong background in lexical semantics and syntax and have native-like
competence of German. In addition, applicants should have experience
in dealing with MySQL-databases and German online corpora (e.g.
DWDS, DeReKo). The research plan should concern the semantics of
clause-embedding predicates in German (possibly in cross-linguistic
perspective).

3) Language acquisition: Applicants should have a strong background
in experimental research, specifically eye-tracking studies with children
or adults. Research experience and plans should focus on the
acquisition of discourse coherence phenomena in grammar and/or
pragmatics. Fluent competence in German is required though research
on languages other than German is highly welcome.

4) Theoretical Syntax: Applicants should have a strong background in
generative syntax and its interface to morphology and/or its interface to
semantics. The research plan should concern phenomena in the
syntax of embedding and concatenation. Research that employs
experiments and/or corpora would be particularly welcome.

Applications must be submitted via electronic mail and include the
following four items: 1) a curriculum vitae including a complete list of
publications; 2) electronic copies of three representative publications in
pdf-format; 3) a letter of intent specifying research experience and
plans in detail; 4) the names of at least two scholars to be contacted for
letters of recommendation. Please name your documents along the
following convention: zas2012-no. of position-last name-document
content.pdf, e.g. zas2012-1-smith-cv.pdf

This Year the LINGUIST List hopes to raise $67,000. This money will go to help
keep the List running by supporting all of our Student Editors for the coming
year.

Drive 2012 site!

There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!

You can donate right now using our secure credit card form at

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as
such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered
501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These
donations can be offset against your federal and sometimes your state tax
return (U.S. tax payers only). For more information visit the IRS Web-Site,
or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match
any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your
contacting your human resources department and sending us a form that the
EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer. This is generally a
simple administrative procedure that doubles the value of your gift to
LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if
your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
