University or Organization: International Linguistic Association
Job Location: New York, USA
Web Address: http://www.ilaword.org/
Job Rank: Managing Editor
Specialty Areas: General Linguistics
Description:
Managing Editor for the journal, WORD
The executive board of the International Linguistic Association is seeking a
managing editor for the association’s journal, WORD. Editorial terms are for
three years, renewable.
WORD publishes peer-reviewed research and theoretical articles from all
disciplines in linguistics. Also, through its robust book review sections,
WORD makes available critical analyses of a wide range of published materials.
Occasionally, special issues on specific topics are produced. WORD
subscriptions are available to both individuals and institutions.
Qualifications and Responsibilities:
The managing editor should be an established linguist with experience in
editorial work, strong organizational skills, and an imaginative conception of
the journal's future. Some institutional support is essential.
The managing editor has final responsibility for all material that appears in
the publication. The editor works with an editorial board, presently
consisting of two associate editors and a book review editor; receives,
reviews and approves manuscripts; and supervises the copy editing process. The
editor participates as necessary in meetings of the executive board. The
association is in conversation with publishers who could facilitate the
process with online platforms for communication, editing and publishing work.
The Journal’s Mission:
WORD is the publication of the International Linguistic Association (ILA).
Founded in 1943 as the Linguistic Circle of New York, the association became
one of the main sources of new ideas in American Linguistics at that time. Its
journal WORD was founded in 1945 with a mission to disseminate the scholarly
discussion of the day and to become the journal of record for general
linguistics. During several decades of intellectual ferment in linguistics,
the scholarship published by WORD continued to record the expansion of
linguistic ideas—both theoretical and applied. Today, WORD continues its
broadly-based mission to reflect and record contemporary linguistic
scholarship.
A letter of interest and a CV should be sent to Professor Jo Anne Kleifgen at
the application email address below. Review of applications will begin
immediately.
See the International Linguistic Association’s website address above for more
