Call Deadline: 31-Jan-2014

Meeting Description:

DiGS16 will host a special workshop entitled 'Converging Corpora: How to standardize historical corpora of typologically and genetically different languages' on 2 July 2014, aiming to present and discuss historical corpora and methodological issues related to corpus-building.

With the recent increase in the number of annotated historical corpora, it seems reasonable to explore the possibilities of collaboration. The objective is to move towards a harmonized common framework and methodology. An important goal of the workshop is to highlight the issues we encounter when annotating languages with rich morphology.

2nd Call for Papers:

Converging Corpora:
How to standardize historical corpora of typologically and genetically different languages

Questions we would like to be addressed include:

- To what extent should the existing annotation schemes be extended for the incorporation of highly inflected languages?
- How can existing schemes be extended to accomplish this?
- How can the linguistic annotation of historical corpora be standardized to serve an easy-to-use data access for linguists?

We invite abstracts addressing one or more of these issues. Abstracts should be anonymous and no longer than two pages, including references and examples, in 12-point Times New Roman, with margins of at least 2,5 cm / 1 inch. Submissions for the workshop are limited to a maximum of one individual and one joint abstract per author, independently from submissions for the DiGS16 conference.

Abstracts for the workshop are to be submitted in pdf-format via the EasyChair system at: https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=digs16.

For detailed instructions on how to submit an abstract for the workshop in the EasyChair system, please visit the conference website: http://www.nytud.hu/digs16/workshop.html.

We are planning a session with interactive demonstration of already existing corpora, and invite applications by email (digs16.budapest at gmail.com). Both presenters of the workshop and other registered participants of DiGS 16 are welcome to give a demo of their corpus.

The workshop will conclude with a round table discussion on the standardization of morphological annotation in historical corpora, and will be moderated by Anthony Kroch (University of Pennsylvania). Anthony Kroch is the project leader for the Penn Parsed Corpora of Historical English and has consulted on the construction of parsed corpora of French, Icelandic and Portuguese.
