Job Title: Assistant Professor of Spanish, Spanish Linguistics
Job Rank: Assistant Professor
Specialty Areas: General Linguistics
Required Language(s): English (eng)

Description:
The Amherst College Department of Spanish invites applications for a full-time
tenure-track appointment in Spanish linguistics, with a primary focus on
teaching Spanish as a second language, at the rank of assistant professor, to
begin July 1, 2017. Within the last decade, Amherst College has profoundly
transformed its student body in terms of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and
nationality, among other areas. Today, nearly one-quarter of Amherst’s
students are Pell Grant recipients; 44 percent of our students are domestic
students of color. Our expectation is that the successful candidate will excel
at teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to
race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual
orientation, and religion. We seek candidates actively engaged in research who
will offer dynamic beginning, intermediate, and advanced Spanish language
courses for our diverse community of language learners, including non-native
and heritage speakers.
The successful candidate will play an integral part in the department’s
revision of its language program. A Ph.D. in hand, native level fluency in
Spanish, fluency in English, and prior college or university classroom
teaching experience are required. Teaching duties include two courses per
semester, academic advising, directing undergraduate theses, and supervising
language assistants. Review of applications will begin on November 15, 2016,
and continue until the position is filled. A letter of application that
addresses research and teaching, CV, sample language course syllabus, short
writing sample of current research, and three confidential letters of
recommendation should be submitted electronically to the application URL
below. Questions may be addressed to Professor Sara Brenneis at the contact
email below. Initial interviews will be conducted at the MLA Convention in
Philadelphia or via Skype.
Amherst College, a private undergraduate liberal arts college for women and
men, with 1,800 students and more than 200 faculty members, is an equal
opportunity employer and encourages women, persons of color, and persons with
disabilities to apply. The college is committed to enriching students’
educational experience and the institutional culture through the diversity of
its faculty, administration, and staff. Located in the Connecticut River
Valley of western Massachusetts, Amherst participates with Hampshire, Mount
Holyoke, Smith College and the University of Massachusetts in the Five-College
Consortium.
