Description:

The interdisciplinary research training program SToRE of the Collaborative
Research Center (CRC) 991 “The Structure of Representations in Language,
Cognition, and Science” awards up to four fellowships for up to six months
starting in October 2017 for international graduate/postgraduate students. The
fellowship consists of a monthly stipend of EUR 1,468 (plus child care
allowance where applicable) and an economy class roundtrip flight/train
ticket. Successful applicants will be graduate/postgraduate students studying
towards a PhD at a university outside Germany, working on a topic that is
related to the CRC’s research program.

This fellowship is thus intended for PhD students who work on a topic that is
related to the CRC’s core business. Building on Barsalou’s (1992) work, the
CRC assumes that frames are the universal format of human cognition. That is
to say, they are applicable across a wide variety of disciplines, from
psychology to semantics. Cluster A covers the general and foundational issues
related to frames: their grounding, composition and properties. Cluster B
groups together the projects that explore dynamic frames, with event frames
and event modification as a unifying dimension. The C-cluster has operations
on frames as a central aspect, specifically concerning countability, nominal
derivation and modification. The D-projects apply frames beyond their original
boundaries and extend their applicability to a wide variety of fields, such as
information structure and phonology. 

Fellows will become members of the graduate training program and will have
access to all courses and workshops. They will be active members of the
research group they applied for. As such, they will be provided with a
workplace and a computer.

In order to apply for the fellowship, applicants should review the different
projects on the CRC’s website (see above) and introduce themselves as well as
their work to Graduate Program coordinator Eva Gentes
(store_sfb991 at phil.hhu.de). The coordinator will contact the respective
principal investigator and if the principal investigator is willing to sponsor
the application, the candidate will be nominated and invited to submit a full
application. In turn, the nomination will be reviewed by the application
committee. 
Candidates have to be nominated to the application committee by 1st May 2016.
It is advisable that candidates contact their nomination sponsor well in
advance.
