Description:
The Department of Linguistics at Swarthmore College invites applications for a
Laboratory Instructor to begin in the fall semester of 2018. The Linguistics
Department seeks to expand on its practice of integrating skills workshops
into the core curriculum. We need a colleague to help us support faculty and
students from diverse backgrounds in the acquisition of applicable up to date
technology to bolster theoretical and empirical projects. The position of
Laboratory Instructor is a nine-month, full-time, instructional staff
position. The initial appointment, for the 2018-2019 academic year, will begin
on August 1, 2018. The appointment is renewable.
Applicants must be enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the field and
methodologies of Linguistics, demonstrate the ability to support the
department’s core curriculum and student research, to train students in skill
subsets for academic and non-academic careers in Linguistics. The successful
candidate should have a M.A. or B.A. in Linguistics. An ABD or PhD in
Linguistics, expertise in statistics, and knowledge of digital workflows are
desirable. The strongest candidates will demonstrate an ability to identify
creative methods and technology for instruction outside of the classroom, and
identify emerging student needs, including programming, discipline specific
software for acoustic analysis, and audio-visual recording. Ideally, the lab
instructor would occasionally travel to fieldwork sites with faculty and
students during the summer months. Additional compensation is available for
such summer work.
