Abstract:

In Noord-Limburg gaan zuidelijke Zuidnederfrankische dialecten over in
noordelijke Kleverlandse. Over de precieze afgrenzing zijn dialectologen het
na 170 jaar nog steeds niet eens. De klassieke afbakeningen steunen op
uitverkoren isoglossen. Het vaakst genoemd zijn de ik-ich/ook-auch-
(deUerdinger lijn), de mij-mich- en de gij-du-isoglosse. De dialectometrie
biedt nieuwe mogelijkheden, maar twee eerdere grofmazige dialectometrische
onderzoeken leidden tot onduidelijke resultaten in Noord-Limburg.

In dit dialectometrische onderzoek hebben wij de onderlinge dialectafstanden
in Noord-Limburg en een belendende strook in Duitsland bepaald met een
fijnmazig netwerk van plaatsen. Uitgangspunt waren de 207 begrippen van de
Swadesh-lijst, een lijst met elementair menselijke begrippen, die haar waarde
in taaltypologisch onderzoek heeft bewezen. Deze 'Swadesh-woorden' hebben we
uit drie verschillende dialectenquêtes geput. Omdat geen enkele dialectenquête
alle 'Swadesh-woorden' omvatte, verkregen we drie woordverzamelingen van
uiteenlopende omvang en samenstelling. Per woordverzameling hebben we de
onderlinge dialectafstanden bepaald met verschillende algoritmes, maar telkens
vonden we dezelfde indeling.

Aan Duitse kant vonden we een scherpe noord-zuidtegenstelling. In
Noord-Limburg een noord-midden-zuidtegenstelling, waarvan de noord-middenkloof
het diepst bleek. Aanvullend onderzoek naar pronomina leverde een driedeling
aan weerszijden van de rijksgrens op, waarin de noord-middentegenstelling
wederom het grootst bleek. Het doordringen of juist belemmeren van
klankveranderingen of pronominale veranderingen blijkt vooral terug te voeren
op historische ontwikkelingen in de machtsverhoudingen en politieke of
kerkelijke grenzen. Aldus hebben we een duidelijke dialectscheiding in
Noord-Limburg gevonden die met geen van voornoemde isoglossen samenvalt.
