Dissertation Abstract:
Considering the fact that the use of mobile devices for educational purposes
is becoming widespread, lots of applications that promote learning of foreign
languages ??are available. In a first empirical study, we went over this
reality, what allowed us to identify a mismatch between linguistic and
pedagogical aspects of these apps and a contemporary linguistic education that
considers systemic-functional linguistics (Halliday, 1978), multimodality
(Kress and Van Leeuwen, 2006), critical reading (Braga, 1998) and situated
learning (Cope and Kalantzis, 2003). In a second empirical study, the
Vecindario application for Spanish language learning was developed according
to the Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL). The application project was
based on theoretical references of language education and strategies for
teaching with digital technologies such as gamification (Werbach, 2014) and
storytelling (Xavier, 2015), aiming to explore the technology resources
available in mobile devices as well. The experiment consisted in making the
instructional design and the digital prototype of the application, and this
prototype was made in collaboration with researchers from the Computing
Institute at Unicamp. The prototype of the Vecindario application was tested
in a group of volunteers and the results found in this case study (FALTIS,
1997; GIL, 2009) pointed out promising ways for other learning experiences of
similar nature
