Description:
The Institute for Natural Language Processing (IMS) at University of
Stuttgart) has an opening for one post-doc researcher to work in the context
of a new project on modelling argumentation dynamics in political discourse,
headed by Jonas Kuhn and Sebastian Padó, in close collaboration with political
scientist Sebastian Haunss from the University of Bremen.
The successful candidate will develop methods to automatically identify
argumentation structures in news coverage, aggregate these structures
according to various criteria (thematic coherence, actors, temporal
development), and make them available, through suitable diagnostics such as
visualization, to analysts from the political science domain.
Candidate must have substantial knowledge of natural language processing,
excellent communication skills, strong programming and software engineering
skills, and at least basic knowledge of the German language. Prior experience
with the field of argumentation analysis will be considered a plus.
The candidate for the Postdoc position should have:
- PhD in computer science, computational linguistics or similar
- proven track record in interdisciplinary work in digital humanities or
computational social science, including corpus annotation methodology
- substantial experience in the application, adaptation and visualization of
NLP models
- ideally, prior experience with machine learning
The position will be available for three years, starting in early 2018. All

The salary is according to the German university payscale (TV-L 13 100%). To
