Description:
Applications are being sought by the Department of Linguistics at Simon Fraser
University for a continuing teaching faculty position (Lecturer) in the
Department of Linguistics with dedicated workload in the Cognitive Science
Program, starting July 1, 2019. The successful candidate will teach half time
in Linguistics and half time in SFU’s Cognitive Science Program. The standard
course-load for a Lecturer at SFU is 8 courses per year or equivalent.
Applications are invited from candidates with expertise in experimental and/or
computational methods in linguistics and cognitive science. The ideal
candidate will be able to teach a subset of lower-division courses in the two
programs, including existing courses such as Exploring the Mind, Language and
Communication, Learning in Everyday Life, and Foundations in Cognitive
Science, while participating in the development of a new lower-division course

also participate in the development and teaching of a subset of upper-division
courses such as computational modeling of cognitive processes, computational
linguistics, psycholinguistics, as well as a capstone undergraduate course for
cognitive science majors and minors. Ability to occasionally teach a core
area of linguistics that contributes to cognitive science such as generative
syntax, formal semantics, or theoretical phonology is a plus.
Linguistics at SFU offers both graduate and undergraduate degree programs. The
department currently serves 275 undergraduate majors/minors and 50 graduate
students.
Cognitive Science at SFU (web page: http://www.sfu.ca/cognitive-science.html)
offers an undergraduate BA degree. Students in the program build their
curriculum according to their interests, drawing on courses in Linguistics,
Philosophy, Psychology, and Computing Science. The program currently serves 50
majors and minors.
Duties of the position will include undergraduate teaching in linguistics and
cognitive science and participation in the collegial governance of the
Department of Linguistics and the Cognitive Science Program. Applicants should
have a completed PhD by time of appointment. This is an entry-level position.
Only those holding or those eligible to be promoted to the rank will be
considered. The position is subject to availability of funding.
SFU is an equity employer and encourages applications from all qualified
individuals including women, persons with disabilities, visible minorities,
Indigenous Peoples, people of all sexual orientations and gender identities,
