Focus: The University of Michigan Linguistics Department invites you to apply to the Humanities Emerging Research Scholars (MICHHERS) program <www.rackham.umich.edu/michhers>.
This all expenses paid program will bring talented undergraduate and MA students to Ann Arbor for a 14-day workshop to help you prepare to apply to a PhD in Linguistics, and to give you an overview of the opportunities and resources available for students at the University of Michigan, including Linguistics. You will meet with faculty and PhD students to talk about research in linguistics, and will have the opportunity to work on your own research project under the guidance of U-M Linguistics faculty and current PhD students. The event will also include a graduate application workshop and social gatherings with faculty and current graduate students from Linguistics and other disciplines.
Minimum Education Level: No Minimum
Special Qualifications:
Rising seniors, bachelor’s degree holders, and those currently in M.A. programs, particularly those from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in graduate education who are planning on pursuing a Ph.D. in Linguistics. Application open to U.S. citizens, permanent residents or non-U.S. citizens with DACA.

they already know you are interested in applying.
Selected applicants will receive a $1,000 stipend for their participation in
the program. Round trip travel, lodging, and on-campus meals will also be
paid by MICHHERS.

This summer program will take place from June 11 to June 23, 2018. We seek
rising seniors, bachelor’s degree holders, and those currently in M.A.
programs, particularly those from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented

Linguistics has participated in the MICHHERS program since it started five
years ago, and it has now been expanded to a full two-week internship,
including additional benefits, with the support of a grant from the Andrew
Mellon Foundation.
Applicants interested in syntax, semantics, phonetics, neurolinguistics,
language contact or sign language research are especially encouraged to apply,
since available faculty mentors are more likely to be available in these
areas.
