Focus: Czechs in the Central European Cultural Context is an 11-week university lifelong learning certificate module. Focused on the interconnections between history, culture and art in Czech society, our fascinating courses will equip you with the tools to understand the past and present of Czech society in its wider Central European context. The module will also provide insights into future challenges, helping you understand how Czech society will develop as part of a Central European space being driven forward by processes of global integration. As part of the module:

- you will explore Czech history (and the history of Czech culture and art) framed in the broader context of developments in Central Europe as a whole
- you will learn about major figures and movements in Czech literature and philosophy, and you will study how they shaped Europe’s cultural, political and religious landscape
- you will trace the transformation of Czech society throughout history up to the present day, and you will address contemporary issues and debates from a sociological perspective
- you will study the Czech language from beginner level (no prior knowledge of Czech is required) with the focus on developing basic fluency and communicative competence while also exploring our country’s culture and history through its language.

The module offers a broad-based, interdisciplinary exploration of modern Czech society – a society which is currently being shaped through debates over social values, identities, and national heritage. These issues not only form an integral part of Czech history; they also play a vital role in contemporary discussions over the country’s place in Central Europe and the wider world at a time when translocal cultural exchanges and conflicts are becoming increasingly relevant.

- History of the Czech Lands in the Context of Central Europe: From the Middle Ages to the 20th Century
- Czech Art and Architecture: From Gothic to Modernism
- Introduction to Czech and Central European Culture
- The Development of Czech Philosophical Thought
- Selected Chapters from Czech Literature in the Context of European Literature (Jaroslav Seifert, Miroslav Holub, Bohumil Hrabal, Milan Kundera and others)
- Changes in Czech Society – a Sociological Perspective
- Sociology of Migration in Central Europe
- Contemporary Issues in the Czech Republic and Central Europe
- Introduction to the Czech Language for Beginners
Minimum Education Level: No Minimum

Special Qualifications:
Requirements - proof of language skills:Candidates must demonstrate a minimum B1 skill level ("independent user" according to the CEFR -Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) or the equivalent shown here:

Applicants who have previously completed at least two years of studies in English-speaking countries (e.g. Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK, the USA) do not need to submit a certificate proving their language skills.

Description:
The Czech Republic is situated in the geographical heart of Europe, and this
unique location has enabled the country to evolve into a transcultural centre
offering an open platform for cultural exchange and integration, commerce and
trade, media, and tourism. Maybe you come from a region which already has
established strong commercial or cultural links with the Czech Republic or is
interested in developing such links in the future. Your expertise in Czech
studies will be a valuable asset for you in various professional settings,
especially those where intercultural experience and skills are needed – such
as transnational networks. Studying the module Czechs in the Central European
Cultural Context will give you an in-depth Czech perspective on this unique
culture in the very heart of Europe.
