Job Title: Research Engineer (Open Rank)
Job Rank: Researcher

Specialty Areas: Cognitive Science; Computational Linguistics

Description:

ETS's Research & Development division has an opening for a research engineer
in the NLP & Speech research group. The projects in this research group focus
on the application of NLP, speech, dialog, and multimodal processing
algorithms in automated scoring capabilities for assessment and learning tasks
involving constructed responses.

Basic Functions and Responsibilities:
- Implement and contribute to the planning of assessment components including
NLP, speech processing, dialog systems, or multimodal processing in the scope
of complex research projects for ETS researchers, testing program areas, and
external clients. Consult with experienced research scientists in the
application, modification, and documentation of such systems using established
technologies, and novel approaches from the research literature.
- Analyze, design, modify, develop, document and implement technologies for
executing complex NLP, speech, dialog, and multimodal research and development
tasks.
- Consult area- or division-wide on the development of technologies for
executing complex NLP, speech, dialog, and multimodal research and development
tasks.
- Contribute to the evaluation and/or the implementation and support of new
NLP, speech, dialog, and multimodal methodologies to support research system
development.
- Contribute to the preparation of research project proposals and related
cost/resource estimates.
- Maintain continuing awareness of recent advances in NLP, speech processing,
multimodal analytics, dialog, machine learning, and software development
methodologies.
- Develop technical documentation of NLP, speech, dialog, and multimodal
systems, solutions and results.
- Assist with area-wide staff training and development initiatives through
one-on-one mentoring and/or small group training exercises.
- Develop external professional relationships and work to cultivate a
scientist’s identity.

Education:
- A Master's degree in Computer Science, NLP, Cognitive Science, Educational
Technology, Human Computer-Interaction, Language Technology, Computational
Linguistics, Linguistics or a closely related field is required.

Experience:
- Four years of diverse experience in natural language, speech processing,
dialog, or multimodal analytics, handling increasingly more complex and
diverse research and development tasks, are required. Candidates with less or
more experience will be considered for the appropriate level position.
- A strong programming background (preferably in Python), and facility with
computational algorithms are essential. Experience in statistics and using
machine learning toolkits (such as scikit-learn and Tensorflow) are highly
desirable. Experience with text and speech processing software and/or spoken
dialog tools/frameworks (such as NLTK, Praat, OpenSMILE and Kaldi) is
desirable.

Other Requirements:
- Knowledge of UNIX and Windows computing environments.
- Familiarity with UNIX tools, scripting languages, and tools for managing
software projects.
- Familiarity with algorithms, methods and data structures in common use in
the processing of speech, language, dialog, and multimodal data.
- Excellent verbal and written communication.
