Description:
The Open University of Catalonia (UOC) has launched a call to award PhD
scholarships in several areas of research. One of these is Conceptual Metaphor
and Mental Health under the supervision of Drs. Marta Coll-Florit and Salvador
Climent.
This research is embedded in the project “MOMENT Metaphors of severe mental
disorder. Discourse analysis of affected people and mental health
professionals” (Coll-Florit et al. et al., 2018). Its central aim is to
analyze texts produced by individuals affected by mental disorders in the web
(blogs, social networks) in the light of the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT)
cf. Lakoff & Johnson (1980/2003), Lakoff (1991, 1993). Climent & Coll-Florit
(2017) is an example (in Spanish) of the proposed research.
Both distance and full-time face-to-face positions(in Barcelona) for a
three-years period are offered but only the latter are eligible for
scholarships –on a competitive basis. Preliminary requirements:
- MA degree in Linguistics or equivalent, with experience in Cognitive
Linguistics and/or Conceptual Metaphor Theory.
- Because of a University-wide strict selection process applicants must have
an excellent academic record (higher than 8.5 on a 1 to 10 scale).
- One of the main selection criteria will be the definition of a research
project. Therefore candidates must contact the supervisors in advance by
submitting a 500 word project outline.
Detailed information and requirements to apply for the scholarships can be
found in the following link:
https://www.uoc.edu/portal/en/escola-doctorat/index.html
This PhD proposal is part of the “Information and Knowledge Society Doctoral
Programme”; research line “Culture, Society and Language”; research
group/topic ''GRIAL. Linguistic Applications Inter-University Research
Group''.
When applying, please refer to the following research group/topic area:
“GRIAL. (1) CONCEPTUAL METAPHOR AND MENTAL HEALTH”.
Before filling the application forms, candidates should email a cover letter
explaining his/her specific reasons for applying to the programme, a
description of his/her interest in carrying out research in the field of
Conceptual Metaphor and Mental Health, a curriculum vitae indicating degrees
obtained, disciplines covered and other relevant experience, and the
aforementioned 500 word project outline.
This statement should be addressed to Dr. Salvador Climent: scliment at uoc.edu
DEADLINE:
Call is now open and closes on 12 February 2019. The application requires
several documents to be submitted. Make sure you prepare your application in
advance.
