Position Summary: (Must be commutable to Menlo Park, CA - Daily)
We're looking for linguists to help process language data for text-to-speech
and speech recognition technologies. We're looking for linguists who are
native speakers of American English, UK English, or Latin American Spanish,
who are familiar with waveforms, spectrograms, and phonetics. Will provide
pronunciation information, develop and/or improve phonetic transcription
guidelines, evaluate speech data for dialectal variation, and curate audio,
text, and spectrograms from text-to-speech recording sessions.
This is a full-time position onsite at the client’s facility in the San
Francisco Bay Area. The work is scheduled to start asap and expected to last
through the calendar year. Successful candidates will need to pass a SAMPA and
proofreading test as well as a background check.
Key Responsibilities:
Onsite Lead Phonetician:
- Source and proofread texts for recording scripts
- Phonetically transcribe speech data according to guidelines
- Orthographically transcribe speech data match corresponding audio files
- Align speech data to corresponding waveforms/spectrograms, consistent with
guidelines
- Follow/improve existing documentation
- Enrich natural language data sets
- Handling personnel issues
- Weekly quality checks of remote linguists’ data
- Handling data transfer between internal and external tools
- Communicating announcements, feedback, etc.
Qualifications:
- A Degree in Linguistics, Speech Science or related field
- Experience/interest in linguistics, especially phonology, phonetics,
dialectology
- Native speaker of US English, UK English, or Spanish
- Experience/proficiency with transcription systems (such as SAMPA, IPA)
- Praat and/or equivalent familiarity with spectrograms
- Collaborative and solution oriented attitude
- Ability to quickly learn new skills and adapt to a changing environment
- Ability to focus on a single task for multiple hours
- Strong attention to detail
- Communicates clearly verbally and via email
- Available fulltime (40 hrs weekly)
- Able to work onsite in the San Francisco Bay Area
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree and/or industry experience
- Fluency in two or more natural languages
