Description:
Title of the project: “Interlinguistic and intercultural communication for
natural risk: translation and semiotic questions”
This thesis is part of the CLOUDBURST dictionary project on natural risks and
will be supervised by Friederike SPITZL-DUPIC and Michaël GRÉGOIRE. The
doctoral student will be attached to the Language Research Laboratory and LSHS
Doctoral School of the University Clermont Auvergne.
The ongoing project aims to enrich existing work on natural risk management
and communication to build a multilingual semantic database in the form of a
dictionary. Accessible first in four languages (English, French, Spanish,
German), it will aim to provide a better understanding of key terms in
emergency situations caused by a natural disaster. The dictionary and the
database on which it will be based will be intended for the general public,
and for Local Governance Units and all other actors responsible for the
management of natural disasters. The main terms will be listed at the lexical
level (glossary of terminology equivalents) but also at the semantic level
(definitions, comments). Each of the English entries will be given
translations into the other three working languages, a definition and a notice
clarifying the (inter)cultural meaning. The constitution of the database will
be accompanied by a classification of symbols associated with words, called
geomojis.
Such a tool must be based on theoretical and applied research, and corpus
investigations. The doctoral student will be responsible for compiling corpora
relating to natural risk situations and for developing a theoretical framework
to encompass the various data; this will include analysis of the impact of
transmission and reception contexts, as well as defining aspects of verbal and
non-verbal language. They will examine the translation and intercultural
problems that can arise in a natural disaster situation. It will also be
useful to complete both textual and graphic research with surveys using
questionnaires and semi-directive interviews among the communities of experts.
This will make it possible to cross-reference corpus data with information on
technical and specialized needs. This thesis will therefore enrich the corpus
of textual and visual resources in the dictionary of natural risks by
proposing additional equivalences, synonyms, usage variations, specific
contextualization, by accurately evaluating the frequencies of use or by
detecting translation gaps. It will also deal with the (inter)cultural aspects
related with the terms most commonly used in natural risk situations. To carry
out this project, the student will benefit from the support of a local,
national and international network of researchers.
The student must be proficient in English, Spanish and French. English will be
used to maintain relationships with members of the Cloudburst project
internationally, while Spanish is a language spoken in many countries affected
by volcanic risks. English and French will be the working languages in local
laboratories. The language of the thesis will be French or English. Finally,
the doctoral student will have to learn about geology and volcanology sciences
and natural risk to acquire the knowledge necessary for the development of the
specialized corpus and to build collaborative work with researchers in those
fields.
Duration of the allowance: 36 months
Remuneration: approximately 1758 € gross
Desired employment date: January 2020
Selection process: early December 2019
The application must be received by November 5, sent to
friederike.spitzl-dupic at uca.fr, michael.gregoire at uca.fr and edlshs.drv at uca.fr.
It must include a CV, a cover letter (2 pages max.), Master’s degree
transcripts and a summary of previous work / the Master 2 thesis.
The candidates who best fit the profile will be invited for an interview in
December in Clermont-Ferrand (a videoconference is possible for candidates
outside Europe).
