focus on linguistic landscape analysis, on linguistic hybridisation, language
policy or on the contested transmission of cultural or symbolic systems in
urban spaces. The candidate should have strong methodological skills and we
are particularly interested in applications from candidates who have a proven
record of research based on interdisciplinary methodology, such as the

The position is embedded in an interdisciplinary research environment within
the University of Duisburg-Essen as well as the University Alliance Ruhr. The
candidate is expected to conduct high quality research, to contribute to
ongoing research and to participate in applications for third party funding
within the context of cross-faculty initiatives such as the Joint Center Urban

Alliance Ruhr, as well as the interdisciplinary center for research on

Essential Criteria:
A first degree in English linguistics and a PhD in (applied) linguistics,
cultural studies, media studies, human geography or other relevant
disciplines. Demonstrated experience and commitment to fieldwork and to the
analysis of rich interdisciplinary data-sets from urban/metropolitan areas in
the English-speaking world. The applicant is expected to demonstrate
competence in German at C1 level within two years after starting the post.
Publications in the field of expertise in peer-reviewed journals are expected,
especially in leading international journals. Experience in the procurement of
competitive third-party funding, involvement in international research and
international experience are desirable. Leadership experience in research is
beneficial.
The University of Duisburg-Essen places great emphasis on excellence in
teaching. Candidates must present their teaching concepts, showing their
relevance to the research profile of the University of Duisburg-Essen.
Applicants must show aptitude for participation in academic
self-administration. Teaching requirements currently are 4 hours of teaching
during the first, and 5 hours of teaching during the second employment stage
of the Junior Professorship.

of academic and professional development, copies of relevant documents and
certificates, exposé of the applicant’s research profile with reference to its
relevance for the University of Duisburg-Essen, a list of successful external
grant applications and of courses taught and a teaching philosophy, an
enumeration of experience in academic self-administration) should be sent by
