Description:
The Department of English Language and Literature at San Francisco State
University seeks to fill a one semester Visiting Assistant Professor position
with an expected start date of January 13, 2020. We are looking for a
candidate whose teaching competencies encompass a wide variety of linguistic
disciplines. The successful candidate will have a desire and ability to teach
undergraduate upper division courses in phonetics, phonology, morphology,
syntax, and sociolinguistics. The Department’s linguistics program serves a
broad constituency of undergrad majors. Experience with a diverse
undergraduate population desired.
Qualifications:
A PhD in linguistics or a related field is required by the start date of
appointment.
Responsibilities:
Undergraduate teaching in linguistics and communication and undergraduate
advising.
Teaching assignment for Spring 2020 will include four courses:
- ENG 421 Syntax (Units: 3) Introduction to contemporary syntactic theory and
fundamentals of linguistic data analysis.
- ENG 424 Phonology and Morphology (Units: 3) Theories and techniques of
phonological and morphological analysis using data from English and other
languages.
- ENG 433 Introduction to Phonetics (Units: 3) Practical skills in phonetic
analysis and scientifically describing the sound systems of the world's
languages.
- ENG 425 Language in Context (Units: 3) (Sociolinguistics) Introduction to
language variation relating to age, ethnicity, gender, region, class,
occupation; language and culture; multilingualism.
Salary:
Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The California State
University (CSU) provides generous health, retirement, and other benefits.

their research and teaching interests and experience. Two letters of
recommendation may be requested once initial applications are reviewed;
therefore, the cover letter should include the names of two academic
references.
