Subject: Language Acquisition; Psycholinguistics: Post Doc, University of Ottawa, Canada

University or Organization: University of Ottawa
Department: Linguistics and Psychology
Job Location: Ottawa, Canada
Web Address: https://arts.uottawa.ca/linguistics/
Job Title: Postdoctoral Research in Psycholinguistics and Language Development
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Language Acquisition; Psycholinguistics

Description:

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in language development
in the School of Psychology and the Department of Linguistics at the
University of Ottawa. The initial appointment is for one year, with the
possibility of renewal for a second year.

The successful candidate will work 50% of the time in the lab of Dr.
Christopher Fennell and 50% in the lab of Dr. Tania Zamuner, both of whom
examine language development in infants and children. Work will involve
assisting with all aspects of conducting the experimental studies associated
with both labs (participant recruitment, preparing and running experiments,
post-processing, analysis, and write-up). Professor Fennell’s research, which
is funded in part by an SSHRC grant and a Research Chair, investigates
bilingual infants’ early word learning and comprehension, using eyetracking
and LENA technologies. The primary responsibility in Professor Zamuner’s lab
will be involvement in a SSHRC funded project looking at the development of
speech production, using eyetracking and word recall methodologies. The
researcher may also oversee graduate and undergraduate students working on
projects related to the two labs. The successful candidate will be encouraged
to develop and lead collaborative research across the two research labs.

In addition, there is the possibility to teach courses related to language
development, or child development more generally.

The research will primarily take place at the innovative University of Ottawa
Living Laboratory at Canada Science and Technology Museum, a national museum
with over 300,000 annual visitors (https://uottawalivinglab.weebly.com/). The
successful candidate will work within a museum setting, and be involved in
coordinating research projects and strategies for knowledge translation to
transmit scientific research to museum visitors.

A Ph.D. in Psychology, Linguistics or a related discipline is required.

Applicants with expertise in the following laboratory techniques are
particularly encouraged to apply: eyetracking (Eyelink 1000 plus), infant
and/or child speech production and perception tasks, and general programming
expertise. Specific experience with R, statistical modeling, and functional
data analysis (particularly mixed-model analyses and generalized additive
models) would be strong assets. Knowledge of French is not required, but would
be an asset.

A cover letter explaining qualifications for the position, a CV, a research
statement, and one or more representative publications, manuscripts, or
dissertation chapters should be sent to the email addresses below. Please also
identify three individuals who can provide letters of recommendation upon
request. Review of dossiers will begin on October 15, 2019 and the position
will be open until filled.

Please submit application packages by copying Christopher Fennell (fennell at
uottawa.ca) and Tania Zamuner (tzamuner at uottawa.ca) on the same email.

The University of Ottawa is an equal opportunity employer. We strongly
encourage applications from women, Aboriginal peoples, persons with
disabilities and members of visible minorities. Any information you send us
will be handled respectfully and in complete confidence.
