Meeting Description:
Language and Disadvantage in Education is a one-day workshop at University
College Dublin to establish a network of researchers of language and
educational disadvantage, share experiences, and work towards a common
approach to language research with young people.
Linguistic Discrimination research quite often focusses on the dichotomy
between L1 and non-L1 users of a language in professional contexts and in
accessing housing and services. Educational disadvantage is another area where
language plays a pivotal role, as ''language is the rope that all other
educational issues are intertwined around'' (Mallinson & Charity Hudley 2010:
254).
This workshop, to be held at University College Dublin, aims to address the
experiences of disadvantage that research has highlighted in recent years.
Building on large scale projects already underway, the commonalities in our
methods and findings may point us towards a unified approach and the
establishment of a more formal coalition of researchers.
Confirmed keynote speaker:
Dr Erin Carrie, Manchester Metropolitan University
Call for Papers:
Papers are requested for 25-minute oral presentations and posters on any topic
related to educational disadvantage on the basis of language. Topics may
include, but are not limited to:
- speakers of migrant languages;
- speakers of minority languages;
- language disabilities;
- gender variety bias;
- ethnic variety bias;
- regional variety bias;
- social class variety bias; and
- social variety bias
Proceedings of the workshop will be proposed as a special issue of a
peer-reviewed journal following the meeting.
Virtual meeting technology will be employed if travel restrictions are in
place. Further details will follow.
Abstract submission deadline: June 15, 2020
Notification of acceptance: July 1, 2020
Registration opens: August 1, 2020
Workshop date: August 21, 2020
