Dear LINGUIST List community,

With rapidly evolving recommendations about social distancing, numerous
linguistic programs are forced to quickly adapt to the new situation. At this
time we want to offer a revamped tool that will help departments quickly get
information about their current updated programs to students, as well as
assist students in finding the program that best fits their current needs.

To that end, we are excited to announce a new instantiation of our linguistics
program database on the new LINGUIST List site, with more details about your
linguistic program, a better search function and an easy way to update the
information by departmental administration. The Programs area of the site can
currently be found here: https://linguistlist.org/teach/programs/.

The new version of the programs portal has an extended number of search
options and login-protected access for the program directors or other
designated persons, to be able to directly maintain their profiles.

Just a few examples of the information we hope to include are:

-Program name and location, including online programs
-Degrees offered (Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD, etc.)
-Subfield strengths (e.g., phonology, language documentation, computational
linguistics, etc.)
-Area strengths (e.g., African, Slavic, Romance linguistics, etc.)
-Faculty and their research focuses
-A prose description of the program, etc.

Students and budding linguists each year are looking to find linguistics
programs that best correlate with their interests: faculty to be their
mentors, geographical, language family and subdiscipline focuses, appropriate
degrees offered, location, etc. They often find it difficult to find all the
information they need in one place. LINGUIST List now offers this resource to
students and the opportunity to linguistics programs to promote themselves in
a way not possible before.

LINGUIST currently has 2178 linguistics and language-focused programs in its
database. Like the rest of the information on the LINGUIST site, linguistics
programs are classified by linguistic subfield and subject language. In the
case of programs, such a classification means that the program has strengths
in a particular subfield or language. Because we added new fields and many
programs have undergone substantial changes, we do not yet have complete
descriptive information on all the programs in our database for the new site.
So, we urge you to check whether the information on your program is complete,
and contact your department administration to update your departmental
profile, as needed, and then continue to curate it, to ensure visibility of
your department and attract best-fitting students. To find your program, go
to: https://linguistlist.org/teach/programs/.
