Description:
Sign Language Linguistics at Syracuse University - Tenure Track/Tenured (Open
Rank)
The Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics, in the College of
Arts and Sciences, and the Department of Teaching and Leadership, in the
School of Education at Syracuse University invite applications for a full-time
tenure-track or tenured position in sign language linguistics to develop a
program in American Sign Language, as rooted in the linguistic program in
Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics and inclusive education in the School
of Education beginning Fall 2021 semester.
The successful candidate is expected to pursue an exceptional program of
research driven by a strong theoretical foundation to understand the human
capacity for language in a non-auditory, gesture-based modality. The candidate
will have a research program that uses rigorous methods of linguistic
analysis. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from
candidates with a research specialization in ASL, although candidates with
research programs in another sign language would be welcome.
The candidate will be expected to contribute to the Linguistic Studies Program
at Syracuse University, as well as the Inclusive Education and Disability
Studies programs in the School of Education. This hire will add depth and
breadth to Syracuse University’s strong research emphasis in the domains of
general linguistics, (A)SL, inclusive education, and disability studies.
The candidates will show evidence of:
- High quality scholarship and the potential to build a vigorous program of
funded research,
- Teaching qualifications at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and
- Promise of excellence in engaging graduate and undergraduate students in
research.
Responsibilities include maintaining an active program of research, teaching
and advising at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and service to the
university.
Applicants for the position should have a Ph.D. in an area of linguistics and
specialization in, or experience with, a sign language. Additional expertise
in one or more related fields, such as ASL, acquisition of a sign language,
psycholinguistics, inclusive education, or disability studies, is strongly
preferred. Competence in ASL will be an asset.
Information about the departments may be found at http://lll.syr.edu/ and
https://soe.syr.edu/departments/academic/teaching-leadership/, and about
disability studies programs at https://soe.syr.edu/disability-studies/. The
School of Education is committed to anti-racist and intersectionally-oriented
pedagogy and practices in the preparation of educators at all levels.

of April 4, 2021 and the search will remain open until the position is filled.
No phone inquiries please. Salary is competitive.
Syracuse University is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer.
