Meeting Description:
What can we learn from neuroimaging about pragmatics? Let's ask one of the
leading neuropragmaticists. On May 13, the XPRAG Wine Gatherings is visiting
Einat Shetreet at Tel Aviv University. Einat will give a talk on ''Scalar
implicatures: Inferences from neuroimaging''. Everyone is cordially invited!
Date: 13 May, 8.15 p.m. (CET)
Speaker: Einat Shetreet (Tel Aviv University)
Talk: Scalar implicatures: Inferences from neuroimaging
Hosts: Nicole Gotzner (University of Potsdam) and Ira Noveck (Université de
Paris, CNRS)
Drink menu: Wine (or beer if you want to celebrate father's day in Germany)

Abstract:
FMRI allows the detection of brain activations with a fairly good spatial
resolution, and is used to determine cortical localization of cognitive
processes. In this talk, I will present a set of fMRI experiments that show
that we can use this technique not only for mapping linguistic functions to
specific brain regions, but also to provide evidence that helps constrain
linguistic theories regarding scalar implicatures.
