 Institution/Organization: Université Clermont Auvergne
Department: English department

Level: PhD

Duties: Research

Specialty Areas: Phonology

Required Language(s): English (eng)

Description:

Project:
This PhD project will take place within the ANR-DFG project entitled English
Root Stress Across Frameworks (ERSaF), which aims to study the regularities of
the English stress system in words without morphological structure or derived
from bound roots. One of the important stakes of the project is the dialogue
and collaboration between different theoretical frameworks. This project is
directed by Quentin Dabouis (Université Clermont Auvergne – Laboratoire de
Recherche sur le Langage) and Sabine Arndt-Lappe (University of Trier,
Germany), and will involve the recruitment of two PhD students: the one
presented here and another one at the University of Trier, both of which will
be supervised by the two project coordinators.
Applicants may find more information on the project at this link:
https://lrl.uca.fr/projet_du_labo/projet-ersaf/

PhD project:
This project will focus on the stress patterns of English nouns. It will
consist in empirical work testing existing hypotheses on two types of data:
data taken from pronouncing dictionaries and experimental data, for which the
PhD student will go record participants in Manchester (United Kingdom). The
results will be analysed in the light of different frameworks, especially the
Guierrian School, analogical models and recent models in generative phonology.
The PhD student will work in close collaboration with the team of project
ERSaF, will participate in regular project meetings and may spend up to 6
months in Germany to work with the Trier team during the time of the project.
The PhD student may be asked to teach up to 64h in the English bachelor’s
degree, which will be paid in addition to the PhD contract.

Required profile:
The PhD student will be fluent in French, English and, optionally, German.
English will be the common language used within project ERSaF. They will
preferably own a master’s degree in linguistics or in English, and have a
solid knowledge of the fundamentals of phonology, and a keen interest in
acquiring techniques of advanced quantitative data analysis (including
computational modeling). Knowledge of different phonological theories and/or
of quantitative data analysis will be appreciated.
Duration of the allowance: 36 months – expected recruitment date: Septembre
2022
The application should be sent before 20 May 2022 to Quentin Dabouis
(quentin.dabouis at uca.fr)

It should include:

 - a summary of previous work / the master’s thesis

After an examination of the applications, the candidates which are judged to
be the most likely to fit the profile will be invited to an audition in June
via videoconference.
Monthly gross salary : 1975€ (teaching salary)
