Job Title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Linguistics
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics; Historical Linguistics; Typology

Description:

The Department of Comparative Language Science of the University of Zurich is
inviting applications for a 4-year Postdoctoral Researcher position associated
with the Swiss National Science Foundation-funded research project 'Reference
production and the evolution of agreement', to commence in April 2023. The
project is to investigate reference production across diverse languages
through corpus-based quantitative methods with the goal of discerning
functional, structural and other factors impacting the use of person forms. In
doing so, the project seeks to identify factors underlying the emergence of
person agreement that have for a long time been related to increased use of
overt person forms at an early stage of the putative process of
grammaticalisation. While the project will seek to include a wide range of
typologically diverse languages, Iranian and Oceanic languages form a special
focus of interest.

The Department of Comparative Language Science at the University of Zurich
plays an important role in the activities of the Centre for the
Interdisciplinary Study of Language Evolution (ISLE)
(https://www.isle.uzh.ch/en.html) and the National Centre of Competence in
Research (NCCR) Evolving Language (https://evolvinglanguage.ch/), and fosters
a vibrant research environment that facilitates interdisciplinary
collaboration.

The postdoctoral researcher will take active part in day-to-day developments
of the project, including in the processing of corpus data and their analysis
as well as the dissemination of research outputs. They will also take part in
the supervision of data processing by RAs and play an instrumental role in
research designs as well as co- and lead-authorship of research articles. The
appointment also offers ample opportunity for the postdoctoral fellow to
further develop their own research portfolio.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in linguistics or computational
linguistics (in hand at time of appointment) and experience in quantitative
corpus linguistics. Ideally, they will also have some prior experience with
spoken-language corpus data from diverse languages, including other than
Western European languages. The ideal candidate will also have first-hand
experience with computational methods in machine learning (and/or related
fields) and probabilistic modelling of corpus data. In addition to a strong
record of academic output in the form of published research articles (relative
to career stage), the successful candidate is expected to bring to the project
excellent communicative skills and the ability to work closely with other team
members and members of the department as a whole, who come with a large
variety of academic, cultural and academic backgrounds.

Starting date: 01.04.2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.
To apply for this position, compile the following documents into a single PDF
file:
 - cover letter (max. one page, brief outline of academic background)
 - CV
 - list of publications
 - research statement (no more than 2000 words, addressing prior experience
and motivation for joining this project in connection

We will commence reviewing applications on 16 January 2023; apply by this date
to ensure full consideration.
