Description:

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for an assistant professor
tenure-track position in Chinese Linguistics. The successful candidate is
expected to have an active research agenda, to direct or co-direct the Chinese
language program, and to teach a range of courses at the undergraduate and
graduate levels, examples may include Introduction to Chinese Linguistics,
Seminar in East Asian Language Pedagogy/Second Language Learning, Special
Topics in Chinese Linguistics, or courses developed from the candidate’s
research field. Candidates should have a completed Ph.D. in linguistics or
related fields and evidence of teaching effectiveness in a Chinese language
program. Candidates whose PhD may be delayed but will complete all the Ph.D.
requirements within the first appointment year may be appointed at the rank of
Instructor. After the Ph.D. requirement is met, the appointment will be
changed to Assistant Professor.

We welcome applicants in any discipline of linguistics who integrates their
research with the learning and teaching of Mandarin Chinese. We seek a
promising scholar and teacher who will actively contribute to the intellectual
mission of our department through teaching, research, and building our Chinese
linguistics and language program. Candidates with a documented commitment to
working with students from groups historically marginalized or
underrepresented in the field through teaching and mentoring are especially
encouraged to apply. Target start date is August 16, 2023. Salary is
commensurate with experience.
