Description:

The School of Education at the University of Michigan seeks to appoint an
advanced Assistant or Associate professor in Educational Studies with a focus
on Multilingual Learners and Educational Linguistics. We seek someone who
draws on meaning-focused theories of language and/or socio-cultural theories
of language learning to value the full complexity of language development in
more than one language. We hope to hire a scholar with a foundation in

The successful candidate should, through their research, teaching, and/or
service, contribute to the diversity, inclusion, justice and equity (dije)
goals of the University of Michigan School of Education.

We will consider applicants knowledgeable in the general areas of multilingual
learners and educational linguistics, with specialization in areas of interest
including linguistic diversity, language education, discourse analysis, and
related fields. We will give higher priority to the overall originality and
promise of the candidate’s work rather than the sub-area of specialization.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the teaching of
Educational Linguistics, Language Development, Second Language Teaching and
Learning, Discourse Analysis, or related topics across undergraduate and
graduate level coursework in multiple programs across the SOE, including the
Educator Preparation Program (EPP), the Education for Empowerment minor, and
the new Learning, Equity and Problem Solving for the Public Good (LEAPS)
program.

Candidates should be prepared to participate actively in our doctoral program
as well as masters and undergraduate courses, including teacher education
courses; as well as supervise doctoral students in their programs and research
and graduate teaching and/or research assistants.

Candidates should be prepared to mentor students, as well as serve on advising
and/or dissertation committees.

Qualifications:
Successful candidates will have:
 - A doctorate in education, applied linguistics, second language teaching and
learning, or related fields
 - Proficiency in a language other than English
 - A commitment to diversity, inclusion, justice and equity, as evidenced
through teaching, service and scholarship
 - An established program of research, writing, and other scholarly activities
related to multilingual learners and educational linguistics, including
bilingual/multilingual education, language development, linguistics in
education, language variation in education
 - Expertise in theoretical perspectives that include functional approaches to
language that recognize language as meaning-making and that engage critically
with socio-political contexts to support equity and inclusion, and a
commitment to diversity, inclusion, justice and equity
 - Interest in contributing to programs and partnerships in educational
linguistics, including those focused on the professional development of
teachers to meet the needs of bilingual/multilingual learners
 - Experience mentoring and/or the capacity to mentor students of diverse
backgrounds and evidence of a commitment to working collegially and with
individuals from diverse backgrounds
 - A track record of or potential for developing and securing grants to
support research

Applications will be reviewed beginning September 15.

Candidates are asked to submit a letter of interest, a curriculum vitae, two
publications that demonstrate scholarly accomplishment, teaching statement,
research statement, diversity statement, and the names of four professional
references. Please submit materials electronically via the application link
