Description:

The University of Macau (UM) is an internationalized public comprehensive
university in the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) located at the
west bank of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. It may be noted
that English is the working language and the primary medium of instruction at
UM.

The Department of English of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) invites
applications for the position of Associate/Assistant Professor in English
Linguistics. The successful candidate should have training in English studies
and general linguistics, preferably with expertise in one or more of the
following fields: 
 - language contact (e.g., bilingualism, multilingualism, contact linguistics,
etc.); 
 - sociolinguistics; and/or 
 - quantitative and computational approaches to linguistic data, especially
using electronic corpora.

The Department of English is an established and distinguished multinational,
scholarly community. The Department offers an undergraduate degree in English
Studies (focusing simultaneously on linguistics and literary studies), as well
as elective courses in translation studies. At the graduate level the
Department hosts two MA programmes in (i) English Studies and (ii) Translation
and offers courses in the University-level MSc in Data Science. The Department
offers PhD degrees in either (a) Literary Studies or (b) Linguistics and
research in the PhD programmes engages with a variety of specializations
(e.g., theoretical linguistics, applied linguistics, translation studies,
etc.). FAH is home to both the Centre for Linguistics
(https://linguistics.fah.um.edu.mo/) and the Centre for Studies in
Translation, Interpreting and Cognition (https://cstic.um.edu.mo) with a
state-of-the-art Cognitive Laboratory. The Department also contributes courses
to the General Education programme.

Qualifications: 
The successful candidate should have a PhD in Linguistics or related area,
teaching experience at the tertiary level and a record of research appropriate
to the rank of Associate/Assistant Professor. Applicants should demonstrate
competence in teaching, promising potential publication, a willingness to
provide service to the University and an interest in the English language in
Asian contexts. Candidates with quality publications and teaching experience
in one or more of the preferred fields are especially welcome.

The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in August 2023.

Remuneration: 
A taxable annual remuneration starting from MOP828,100 (approximately
USD102,230) will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic
qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum
income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various
discretionary exemptions. Apart from competitive remuneration, UM offers a

The effective position and salary index are subject to the Personnel Statute
