Description:
The Department of English at Illinois State University, located in Normal,
Illinois, seeks an Assistant Professor in Theoretical Linguistics for a
nine-month, tenure-track position.
We welcome candidates with a Ph.D. in linguistics (before August 16, 2023)
with a specialization in one or more of the following: Phonology, Morphology,
Syntax, Semantics and Pragmatics, and Sociolinguistics. Strong preference will
be given to candidates with training in (“West Coast”) functionalism and/or
usage-based approaches to the study of language. The candidate will teach
undergraduate courses in English grammar, introduction to linguistics, and
depending on expertise, semantics, sociolinguistics and/or applied grammar.
Regular course assignments will also include graduate topics courses in areas
of the candidate’s choice. The successful candidate must show evidence of, or
potential for, excellent international scholarship in their field as well as
outstanding teaching and mentorship to undergraduates and graduate students.
This appointment will carry a 2/3 teaching load. Salary is competitive and
commensurate with experience and qualifications.
